Description

  • Circle of Lucas Cranach the Elder
  • Recto: the CrucifixionVerso: a male saint lying prostrate beneath a pear tree
Amen.

Whoever wants to carry their cross well, he must wholly renounce the world, and die completely to it, only so will he protect his soul from suffering and pain. He must serve God unfailingly until his end, so that the grace of God will not be taken away from him. This is God’s promise to us all. Amen.

  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is relatively flat and appears stable. The paint surface is well-preserved, with colours vivid and texture intact. The side with the Saint is covered by a very thick varnish, restoration consists of two small retouchings in the text and repair to small lines in the panel in the left sky. Restoration in the Crucifixion scene consists of a small restoration on the hand of the left hand thief, and a repaired scratch measuring 12 cm. running at a diagonal to his cross. There is a small dot of restoration (less than 1 cm.) in the right hand of Christ and a similar diagonal repaired surface scratch on the cross of the right hand thief, measuring 10 cm. The two scratches may be due to the same cause, perhaps the panel was laid onto something for a time and became damaged that way. There is a small area of retouching in the bush at the lower part of the right hand thief's cross and on the rider seen moving into the distance. There are small dot retouching in the building centre background. Much older tiny scattered retouchings in the figure of Christ and in the red cloak of the figure centre foreground. There is some wear tot he faces of the figures. Offered in an engaged frame as picture in the catalogue.
