Description

  • Francesco Monti called Il Brescianino
  • Battle scene
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old secure relining. The paint surface is stable and covered in an old, discoloured varnish. The paint surface is in generally good condition with much of the original impast intact. There has been some damage and blistering along the lower margin. This has been restored and retouched but the canvas remains uneven along the stretcher line. There are three old restored damages in the sky, and other scattered restorations and retouchings throughout.

Catalogue Note

This dynamic battle scene is reminiscent of Brescianino’s Grande battaglia di cavallerie con città sullo sfondo, in a private collection in Brescia, as well as his Battaglia con città sullo sfondo a destra, in a private collection in Parma.

We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri for tentatively proposing the attribution on the basis of a digital photograph.
