The canvas has recently been relined and restretched. The relining is a little rigid and the paint surface somewhat pressed and some finer details a little worn. The paint surface appears in fair overall condition beneath a thick glossy old varnish. There is an old repaired 25 cm diagonal tear upper left, and a series of numerous smaller 5 cm horizontal tears or scratches between the figures and to the right side, with in addition a 3 x 3 cm repaired old damage and smaller associated losses lower left. The garments and faces of the figures appear reasonably well preserved, but under ultra-violet light an extensive campaign of old restoration is visible to all of the background, the space between the figures, the lamp, and the old lady's face. This lot is offered unframed.
