Condition
In very good condition. The copper panel is stable and flat. The varnish layer has now discoloured but the paint surface beneath appears beautifully preserved, with only some minor restoration along the right hand margin.

Catalogue Note
Two comparable compositions were auctioned in these Rooms, the first on the 25 November 1970, lot 69, the second on the 9 December 2010, lot 145. Both compositions include the steep hill rising on the left-hand side but are not as mountainous in the landscape to the right. Griffier was certainly inspired by the Rhenish and Mosan capricci of Herman Saftleven.
