Description

  • Pieter Neefs the Younger
  • Interior of a gothic church with figures attending Mass
  • signed on the pillar centre right: PEETER/ NEEFFS
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The panel is flat and cradled. There are two principle horizontal old joins or splits in the panel. The first is 12 cm from the upper edge running accross for 45 cm. The second is 25 cm from the upper edge and runs accross for 30 cm. There are two smaller horizontal splits of 6 cm and 7 cm running horizonally from the upper left, and lower left margins. The painting is dirty and the varnish layer discoloured. The paint surface appears to be beautifully preserved and untouched beneth the varnish. There is only some minor restoration along the joins and to a 7 cm horizontal scratch at the base of the main pillar on the right. Other intervention is restriced to a few very minor local repairs, chiefly in the bottom right had corner and to a small old loss centre left.
