Condition

The canvas has sound old relining. There is an extension of 4 cm along the upper edge. There is a recent campaign of scattered retouchings, principally in the darker tones and the left margin. The faces, hands and sill life elements remain intact. There are some recent small scratches and two minor losses on the upper left margin.

Catalogue Note

The attribution has been confirmed on the basis of photographs by Anke van Wagenberg-ter Hoeven, who will be including this painting in her forthcoming catalogue of the works of Jan and Jan Baptist Weenix (private communication, Maryland, 4 August 2011). A Portrait of Anthony de Sadelaer (1664–1713) from 1686, which is composed along very similar lines, is in the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem.
