Catalogue Note

This is a charming scene of tranquil domesticity, where the choice of medium, soft chalks and pastel, enhances the tenderness of the moment.

We are grateful to Alastair Laing for confirming the attribution to François Boucher.  He has pointed out that a drawing on blue paper published by Ananoff, which is in reverse of the present work, and which has a pastiche of Boucher as a pendant, is in fact copied from the present one.1
