Catalogue Note

Though the Mediterranean coastal subject matter would be appropriate for a work by Gaspard van Eyck, an Antwerp-born artist who worked alongside Cornelis de Wael in Genoa, Van Eyck's extremely rare drawings are much more precise in their handling (see, for example, the typical View of Lisbon, sold in 19911).  This atmospheric, freely drawn shore seen seems in fact closer to the works of another Antwerp artist, Jan Peeters, who specialised in drawings of far-flung cities, ports and harbours.
