Catalogue Note

Roethlisberger (loc.cit.) described this as an early drawing, executed circa 1622-25, pointing out the stylistic debt to Poelenburch, alongside whom Breenbergh may even have worked at this time.  A drawing by Poelenburch showing these ruins from the much the same viewpoint is in Dresden,1 while a more elaborate, later drawing of the same location by Breenbergh is in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem. The building seen here was a water reservoir, constructed at the end of the Aqua Julia in AD 222-225.
