Catalogue Note

This accomplished ship portrait had traditionally be considered to be by Willem van de Velde the Elder, but in 1990 Michael Robinson suggeted that it may instead be by the Younger van de Velde.  The 'sixth rate' Lark was built in 1675 and sold in 1698.  Another study, seen from slightly further astern, is in Greenwich.1
