Catalogue Note
This portrait can be dated to the early 1740s, soon after William Hoare went to live in Bath. Both the composition and handling of the pastel is extremely reminiscent of the work of Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757). Hoare had been exposed to this important Venetian artist’s work during his nine-year stay in Italy, between 1729 and circa 1739. Furthermore, he is known to have owned at least two pastels by her. We would like to thank Neil Jeffares for his help in cataloguing this lot.
