Catalogue Note

Dr. Jörg Merz, having seen the present study at first hand whilst it was in the De Boer Collection, believes that although the composition is closely inspired by Pietro da Cortona's fresco, An Angel carrying the Instrument of the Passion, in the sacristy of the Chiesa Nuova, the drawing relates instead to an anonymous copy of the fresco, executed on canvas and squared, now in the Stanza di S. Filippo in the same church. We are grateful to Dr. Merz for his help in cataloguing this drawing.
