Catalogue Note

During the 1820s, Calvert was a key member of The Ancients, an artistic group profoundly influenced by the spiritualism and mysticism of William Blake. However, in 1817 he had visited Greece and found additional inspiration from that country. In 1844 he returned there and, according to Sir William Blake Richmond, Calvert was by that time ‘saturated in the Greek mythology.’ 1The present vigorous oil sketch dates from this period and portrays Iasius, the son of Zeus and Demeter, the Goddess of fertility.
