Catalogue Note
This landscape has been dated circa 1800, a year in which Girtin married Mary Ann Borrett and was living in his father in-law's house, 11 Scott’s Place, Islington. Primrose Hill lies under three miles to the west of Islington and thus within easy walking distance.
This work was once owned by the celebrated collector Ray Livingston Murphy (1923-1953), who in his short life assembled a significant collection of drawings. Coincidentally, he also owned Henry Fuseli's Studies of a Woman in Chains and another Figure (lot 214).
We are grateful to Susan Morris for her help in cataloguing this work.
