Condition

The edges of the sheet only have been attached to a backing sheet, which has a large aperture on the reverse allowing the reverse to be seen when unframed. Apart from slight undulation in the sheet and a minor circa 1.5cm old crease near the centre of the composition, this work is in good overall condition, and the ink strong and fresh. Presented framed and glazed, the edges of the sheet visible and not covered by the mat. Catalogue Note

The present work is executed on an envelope sent to Victor Hugo after 13 April 1845, when he was nominated Pair de France, and before July 1848, when Hugo left the Place Royale (today the Place des Vosges), which had been his home since 8 October 1832.
