Catalogue Note

De Bisschop made many drawings after sculptures of all periods, from the antique to works of his contemporaries.  The bust portrayed here shows De Bisschop looking at the work of the sculptor and architect, Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621).  De Keyser's original bust is now lost so the present sheet serves as an important record of it.

Pieter Adriaensz. van der Werff was an important figure in Dutch history.  He was appointed Mayor of Leiden during the siege of that city in 1573-4.

The drawing, incised for transfer, was clearly intended for a print; two such prints are known, executed by Pieter Philippe (c. 1635-1664) and Hendrick Bary (1640-1707).  Philippe's date of death indicates that De Bisschop must have drawn the portrait bust no later than 1664.
