Description

  • Anthonie Waterloo
  • Landscape with trees by a river
  • Black chalk, oiled black chalk and grey wash, heightened with white, on grey paper

Provenance

Arthur Feldmann, Brno;
looted by the Gestapo during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia;
accessioned by the National Gallery, Prague, inv. DK 4632 (bears their mark, verso: NGGS/PRAHA, not in Lugt);
restituted to the heirs of Arthur Feldmann in 2013

Condition

Paper is somewhat discoloured - it appears to have been blueish-grey originally, but is now more brownish - but chalk and other media are all good and fresh. Remains of old paper hinges attached to edges of verso.

Catalogue Note

According to a note on the previous mount, the traditional attribution to Waterloo was endorsed by Martin Royalton-Kisch in 1995.  The creative mixing of media, with extensive use of oiled black chalk in the foreground, is typical of the artist.
