Catalogue Note
Philippe Hiquily is equally known for his sculptures and his design pieces. Born in 1925 in Montmartre, he studied at the Parisian Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the same class as César. One of his works, La Bicyclette, was acquired as early as in 1956 by the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 1959, he exhibited in the New York Gallery: The Contemporaries, and met Charles-Henri Ford the American writer and photographer who became one of his early supporters. A friend of Max Ernst and Georges Bataille he became close to the Surrealist movement without, however, adhering to it. Famous for his work on metal, he began designing pieces of furniture in the 1960s, combining different materials and found objects in order to create poetical sculptures/furniture. Playing with the curves and using precious materials, he produced very feminine and elegant works of art to be living with.
