Condition

Very good condition for an object of this type and age. Age cracks and flaws in the wood, including to proper right back of figure behind the shoulder extending up behind the ear and down into the torso; a wedge-shaped crack to the back of the integrally-carved plinth; and to proper right side of integrally-carved plinth. Minor marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, and small chips consistent with age. Surface varnished. Medium to dark brown patina.

Catalogue Note

Another female figure from the same atelier, and possibly by the same hand as the present figure, was collected by a German trader in the Bemba region circa 1890 and is today in the British Museum, London (inv. no. "1980.Af.1", see Maurer and Roberts 1985: 146, fig. 41).
