Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION. Fludd was an English physician and a prominent Rosicrucian. His Utriusque cosmi historia"is an attempt to cover, and to present with some lucidity, the philosophy based on the harmonious design of the cosmos and the corresponding harmonies in man" (Yates, p.79).

The significance of the Oppenheim imprint connects Fludd's work with events in the Palatinate, where the daughter of James I of England had just married Frederick V, the Elector Palatine. The printer de Bry was a Protestant and had moved his firm from Frankfurt to Oppenheim for religious reasons; however, in 1620 Oppenheim was invaded by Spinola's troops and de Bry had to move back to Frankfurt (where the second edition of Fludd's Utriusque cosmi historia was published in 1624). The Swiss engraver Matthieu Merian was de Bry's son-in-law.
