Catalogue Note

THE FIRST EDITION OF FRÖBEL'S SEMINAL WORK ON THE THEORY OF EDUCATION, OWNED BY THE GERMAN EDUCATIONALIST HEINRICH LANGETHAL.

Die Menschenerziehung by Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel (1782-1852) is one of the great milestones of educational science. Fröbel's methods - he designed balls, wooden blocks and tiles etc. to show that children learn by playing - though controversial at the time, have been widely imitated by current educators and manufacturers of children's toys. This copy was formerly owned by Fröbel's friend and collaborator at Keilhau, the educationalist Heinrich Langethal (1792-1879), who in the year of the book's publication married the foster-daughter of Fröbel's first wife Wilhelmine Henriette Hoffmeister.
