FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, second imprint, of Daguerre's bestselling handbook, which was published in eight "editions" in 1839 alone. This is the second issue produced in September 1839; only two copies are now recorded of the first issue, published around 20 August.
"Daguerre's technique of fixing photographic images on a metallic surface was the first to capture the public's curiosity and imagination, bringing photography out of the laboratories of a few researchers into the mass market" (Norman).
