Catalogue Note

Pietro Paolo Vergerio (1498-1565) was bishop of Capodistria before becoming the first Italian bishop to turn Protestant; he was deprived of his seat in 1549. He was a prolific author and propagandist, often distributing his works for free, and attempted to spread Protestant literature in Italian through northern Italy in the face of the Inquisition and the Congregation of the Index.

His first printer was Dolfino Landolfo of Poschiavo, just over the border from Italy, and once settled in Tübingen from 1553 onwards he used Morhard who eventually became competent in the printing of texts in Italian. To avoid problems with the Inquisition, he started distributing his pamphlets by mail (the Exemplum literarum has a central fold throughout and was plausibly distributed this way).
