Catalogue Note

The legal compilation of the Emperor Theodosius II from the early fifth century contained much relating to the new state religion of Christianity in order to establish orthodoxy; there are numerous decrees against heretics. Cantiuncula (or Chansonnette, from Metz) was professor of civil law in Basel, and this was his first publication, on the sources of Roman law and the metholodogy of the study of law. He left Basel in 1524 because of the increasing tide of the Reformation.

The woodcut border signed HF (Hans Frank?) is also found in Cratander's edition of Aulus Gellius of 1519 and in his Isocrates of 1529 (Fairfax Murray, German 222). It is thought to be from a design by Ambrosius Holbein.
