in which he reports that the Requiem is almost finished, and that he feels he should discuss with him the arrangements for performing the work, asking the Mayor when he might be able to call on him to discuss the matter, since he has to leave Milan rather soon ("...Sig. Sindaco, In seguito a quanto ebbi l'onore di scriverle...nella scorsa Primavera, la Messa da Morte per Manzoni รจ quasi terminata.  Mi resta a prendere in proposito con Lei le opportune intelligenze per l'esecuzione..."), with deletions and alterations

1 page, 8vo (c.19 x 11.5cm), Milan, 26 [?January] 1874

Unpublished and apparently unrecorded.  This is an unrecorded letter about one of Verdi's best-loved works. Verdi had proposed to Belinzaghi in June 1873 that he should compose a Requiem Mass in honour of Alessandro Manzoni, a writer he particularly admired, who had died on 22 May.  Verdi completed his great Requiem only in April 1874, but in this letter already plans its performance, which took place on the anniversary of the novelist's death.  Verdi met Tito Ricordi in Genoa in February 1874 to discuss publishing the work. Verdi wrote again to the Mayor on 14 February, hoping to discuss arrangements. The present letter is apparently unrecorded.
