Description

  • Arnold, Sir Malcolm
  • Autograph working manuscript of the unpublished incidental music to "The Tempest", signed ("Malcolm"), in several places
  • Paper
comprising thirty-five numbered sections, the short score, notated in black, red and blue inks and pencil, with instrumental indications for bass clarinet, contrabass, vibraphone, and with cues to three printed songs not present; the dialogue cues from Shakespeare's play are mainly written in red ink, the page numbers in blue ink, some stage directions ("...Prospero walks forward in silence. With a gesture the lights dim. With his second gesture music begins";  "Monsters take 4 steps back"; "the scene is spoken while the music is played and the shapes enter to their exit..."), the whole score annotated and renumbered by Arnold in pencil, and with notes addressed to "Chris" (the conductor Christopher Whelan)

33 pages, folio (c.37 x 27cm), 14-stave paper ("G & T"), probably c.1959, some repairs and strengthening with translucent adhesive tape

Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) originally wrote the incidental music to The Tempest in 1954; the production was by Robert Helpmann at the Old Vic Theatre, London, first performed on 13 April, and conducted by Christopher Whelan.  However, these unpublished sections include cues for instruments not used in 1954, and may be from a revised version.  Included are No.1 'Opening Scene' for Prospero (five pages), No.17 'Banquet Scene' (on an inserted bifolium with title page), No.24 'Nymph's Dance', [No.26] and 'Juno's Song' ("Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessing", on an inserted bifolium with title-page).  Cue numbers 6, 7 & 32 are for the three numbers published in 1959: Ariel's songs 'Come unto these yellow sands', 'Full fathom five' and 'Where the bee sucks', which are not written out here.
