Catalogue Note

Günther Zainer was the first printer to operate in Augsburg and he worked there from 1468 until his death in 1478. This popular text by Rodrigo, bishop of Zamora (1404-1470), on the religious and secular stations of man, was dedicated to Pope Paul II and first printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz in Rome in 1468.

On 6/8v the last line of text was originally dropped by the compositor but subsequently added in print in the correct place in a slightly longer line than the rest of the printed text. In this copy the additional line of text has been printed the standard distance from the previous line, but in other copies (for example the Ampleforth Abbey copy sold in these rooms in December 2010) there is a distinct gap.
