Catalogue Note

This volume forms part of the second edition of Dostoevsky's collected works, and contains the first edition of "The Gambler". Dostoevsky was himself a gambler and nearly lost all his money in Germany in 1863. He wrote this novella in just under a month, during October 1866, under a strict deadline from his editor Stellovsky, in order to pay off his own gambling debts. Stellovsky also offered him a flat fee of 3,000 roubles for the publication of his collected works, which Dostoevsky finally had to accept in order to satisfy his creditors.
