Catalogue Note

First separate edition of the future Pope John Paul II's religious drama, "a meditation on the sacrament of matrimony, passing on occasion into a drama". The cultural and literary periodical Znak, founded in 1946 by Jerzy Radkowski, was banned during the Stalinist era but restarted in 1956 with a Catholic slant though without being formally attached to the Church. Wojtyla published literary works under two pseudonyms to distinguish from his religious writings; at this time he was auxiliary bishop of Krakow.
