8vo (150 x 93mm.), woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials, seventeenth-century red morocco gilt with the arms of Doge Marco Foscarini, spine gilt in compartments, black morocco lettering-piece, gilt edges, light foxing, extremities silghtly rubbed, spine slightly faded
Provenance
Marco Foscarini (1696-1763), doge of Venice, who had amassed a substantial library, much of which must have been bound in similar style. After the annexation of Venice in 1797-98 the manuscripts in his library were sold to the Austrian Emperor. There is a manuscript note pasted into the back of the book stating that this book belongs to Carlo degli Invernizzi of Milan, an Italian officer during the time of Napoleon, dated 7 June 1840. Richard Caton of Liverpool, armorial bookplate, with manuscript note stating that the book was purchased from Invernizzi by the Greek Consul in Milan, and Caton obtained it from the person who bought it from the Greek Consul.
