Catalogue Note

The first German edition of the Golden Legend, with the first book illustrations produced in Augsburg. This is the second volume only; the first volume (Wintertheil) was published by Zainer in October 1471. The woodcuts, by the so-called Bämler-Master (see Schäfer, p.379), were subsequently used in Zainer's Latin edition of c.1474 (Fairfax Murray, German 431). For another work from Zainer's press, see lot 17.
