Catalogue Note
A substantial collection of Zervos's periodical, which became an important record of the art being produced in these years, with issues focussing on individual artists such as Georges Braque (issues 1-2 for 1933), Picasso (issues 7-10 for 1935), Max Ernst (1937) and Matisse (issues 1-4 for 1939). The list of contributors for issues 5-6 of 1935 includes some impressive names: André Breton, Dalí, Paul Eluard, Kandinsky, Magritte, Miró, Picasso, Man Ray and Yves Tanguy. The political turmoil of the 1930s is reflected in the inclusion of Eluard's poem "Guernica" and Picasso's "Songe et mensonge de Franco" in a 1937 issue, soon after the bombing of Guernica in April 1937 (and indeed is followed by an article by Zervos on the aesthetic principles of the Third Reich).
