Catalogue Note
Winifred Nicholson was based in Paris from 1932- 8 and from about 1935 made regular visits, usually in the spring, to her friends René and Alison Leplat who lived at the Villa Alerta, Cannes, and the painter Jean Hugo, who lived at Lunel, Hérault, and during these trips she explored and painted the surrounding area.
Winifred Nicholson wrote, 'All English people like the sea' and it is surprising how many of her finest works depict the sea. La Mer, Antibes with its placid sea and cloudless sky shows her love of the Mediterranean light.
We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work and for preparing the catalogue note.
