Catalogue Note

Graduated in 1941 from the 12thpromotion of the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, Trinh Van was an important innovator of lacquer painting during the twentieth century. Among his peers are notable artists such as Pham Hau, Nguyen Gia Tri and Nguyen Khang, who were fascinated by the medium’s unique ability to illuminate intricate landscapes with magnificent detailing, despite lacquer being a medium that is extremely time consuming and labor intensive involving  multiple stages of preparation.

This present lacquer painting encapsulates an idyllic scenery of hunting territories in Indochina. The work presents a lush forest landscape in a naturalistic manner. In the foreground is a young man holding a hunting rifle pointing at his prey hidden in the distance. Surrounding the man is a magnificent landscape executed in deep reds and earth tones. The classical technique of lacquer enhanced by subtle gold and silver touches sublimates a peaceful quality while evoking an enigmatic sensibility in the depicted environment. The shapes of undulating mountains, the richness of vegetation and the precise outlining of each leaflet provide a striking impression of an eternal natural beauty. This lacquer piece brings to mind a private sanctuary, for the enchanting nature exudes an extraordinary peaceful quality, especially after the chaos caused by the war.
