Condition

Good condition overall with some minor wear to the red-brown patina (in particular to the Centaur nose tip and his right foreleg. The patina with some remains of black lacquer and a few minor scratches all over the surface. The Centaur proper right foreleg with visible joint.

Catalogue Note

Le modèle antique est connu dès le début du XVIIe siècle dans la collection Borghèse. Sujet populaire, il est copié en marbre pour les jardins de Louis XIV à Marly en France. Il se rapproche du plus âgé des deux Centaures Furietti, redécouvert lors de fouilles entreprises en 1736. Celui-ci aurait été le modèle du Centaure Borghèse. L'expressivité de son visage rappelle par ailleurs celle d'un autre sujet célèbre antique, le Laocoon.
