Condition

The bronze is in very good condition overall, with some minor wear to the patina at several places. The ear appears to have been cast separately and set into the head. there is some oxydation to the joint. Very fine and crisp cast.

Catalogue Note

Rhinocéros indien femelle, Clara est le cinquième spécimen vivant à voyager en Europe. Elle y acquière une popularité comparable à celle du rhinocéros immortalisé par Albrecht Dürer en 1515. Arrivée en Europe dès 1746, elle est reçue en 1749 par Louis XV qui lui fait les honneurs de la ménagerie de Versailles. Elle posera pour Jean-Baptiste Oudry dont le tableau fut présenté au Salon de 1750. A Venise en 1751, Clara sera également le modèle de Pietro Longhi. D'autres versions similaires sont conservées au Barber Institute of Fine Arts, au Louvre et au Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. n° A.528-1910).
