Condition
Very good condition overall, the bronze in light brown patina covered with a dark brown varnish showing some minor wear and a few scratches to the surface, consistent with age and handling.The tip of the baton in her proper right hand broken off.

Catalogue Note
La statue de la comtesse Mathilde de Toscane (1046-1115) fut commandé au Bernin en 1633, lorsque le Pape décida de transférer son corps au Vatican. Mathilde a joué un rôle décisif pendant la querelle des Investitures. Fille du pape Boniface III, marquis de Toscane et de Béatrice de Bar, fille de Frédéric II, duc de Haute-Lotharingie et de Mathilde de Souabe, son tombeau a été érigé à Saint Pierre en 1637. Il est composé d'un sarcophage, surmonté de la figure en pied grandeur nature de Mathilde en marbre. Onze statuettes en bronze sont connues aujourd'hui (h. 40,5 cm), dont une dans la collection du Prince Urban Barberini au Palazzo Barberini, une autre au Art at Raleigh Museum au North Carolina, et celle de l'ancienne collection Max Falk à New York, intitulé au dos CONTESSA MATILDA, aujourd'hui au Harvard Art Museum à Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wittkower le premier suggéra que ces bronzes n'avait pas été réalisés d'après le marbre mais moulés sur une esquisse préparatoire en terre cuite, un bozzetto réalisé par Bernini lui-même, comme le confirme F. Bewer dans son article (op. cit.). Ainsi, on remarque au dos de ce bronze, finement modelé et travaillé en ronde bosse, les traces laissées par l'outil sur la terre encore humide.
