Condition

Very good overall condition with some minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. The Warrior is missing his weapon which he seemed to be holding in the hand of his right outstretched arm. On a later modern verde antico marble base. Very fine and crisp cast with fine details and modelling, warm brown patina . Very fine bronze.

Catalogue Note

Provenant de la collection du célèbre Walter von Pannwitz à Munich, ce bronze se distingue par la finesse du modelé du corps et la précision dans le rendu des détails, parfaitement mis en valeur par une belle patine brune. Pour le geste de l'homme nu au bras tendu, l'artiste s'est certainement s'inspiré du marbre antique du Porteur de flambeau de la collection Ludovisi à Rome (cf. J. Montagu, Alessandro Algardi, Londres 1985, p.401, n° 121). On trouve une statuette d'une attitude similaire personnifiée par un Bacchus parmi les 'douze petites figures de bronze' dans la collection du sculpteur François Girardon (n° 20). L'expressivité des yeux de notre guerrier, le modelé du visage et de la chevelure et le rendu élégant de son corps d'athlète font penser à la facture des bronzes d'Italie du Nord. On peut rapprocher notre bronze aux oeuvres d'artistes ayant travaillé dans l'entourage d'Andrea Riccio (1470-1532) à Padoue, ou de Vettor di Antonio Gambello dit Camelio (1455/60 - 1537) à Venise.
