Good condition overall. A few lacks on the angles from the base, the toes of the child are restored. Dust in the hollow

Catalogue Note
Elève d’Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) puis de Louis Claude Vassé (1716-1772), Lecomte remporta le Prix de Rome en 1758 et y séjourna de 1761 à 1768. A son retour il fut reçu membre à l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, exposa régulière au Salon et participa au décor de nombreux monuments publiques. Cette Vierge à l’Enfant en plâtre fut probablement réalisé come modèle pour le groupe en marbre qui se trouvait la chapelle à droite du jubé de la cathédrale de Rouen. Au Salon de 1775, Lecomte exposa plusieurs modèles en plâtre dont le Mercure de France décrivit l’attitude tendre et profondément humaine de l’enfant Jésus : « représenté couché sur le bras de la Vierge et tenant un de ses doigts dans la bouche ».
