Catalogue Note

James Thrall Soby was a collector, writer and curator, first at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, and from 1940 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He financed the publication of Man Ray’s 1934 album of 100 photographs, Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris, and in 1940 gave his extensive collection of photographs by Man Ray to the Museum of Modern Art.
