Catalogue Note

Alexander Alekhine was a Russian-born chess champion. The present photograph shows Alekhine with Man Ray’s 1926 chess table (see lot 225). “One day [Duchamp] brought in Alekhine, then the world champion, to be photographed and see my designs. The champion was interested, posed with my pieces before him and agreed to allow us to call them the Alekhine set if put into production.” (Self Portrait, 1988, p. 186).
