“When I first became acquainted with [Derain] he had developed an absorbing hobby. Sitting at the bar with me one day, he asked me to step outside to see something. At the curb, stood a long racing car, pale blue in colour … it looked like a custom-built job for him alone. … More beautiful than any work of art, he commented.
