Condition

The canvas is not relined. The colours are fresh and there is no evidence of retouching under UV light. This work is in excellent original condition.

Catalogue Note

Juliet served as Man Ray’s principal muse from the day they met in Hollywood in late 1940. In this oil portrait, painted in striking red, purple and green, Juliet’s eyes are obscured by what Man Ray suggests would be a mask, however, the composition is based upon Man Ray’s photograph of Juliet wearing a wide-brimmed hat casting a large shadow across her face
