Catalogue Note

The concept of the “life mask” would naturally have appealed to Man Ray and the Surrealists, in both its subversive treatment of the traditional death mask and the automatism of the creative process. The 1932 creation of his “life mask” by sculptor Paul Hamann was captured in a series of photographs. The resulting plaster head was Man Ray’s self portrait, becoming a celebrated work in its own right featuring in a number of photographs, including the one chosen for the cover of the artist’s 1934 book Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris.
