Catalogue Note

Man Ray’s Shadow Drawings, circa 1970-71, are a series of drawings of lines and their shadows, creating dramatic, mobile compositions, made in the last years of his long career. Shadows were often used to dramatic effect in Man Ray’s photography, and he develops the theme in a novel way in these drawings. For Man Ray, “the shadow is as important as the real thing.” (quoted in Schwarz, 1977, p. 234).
