Description

  • Marcus & Co.
  • gold, emerald, diamond, enamel
The pendant-brooch centering a cabochon emerald measuring approximately 18.3 by 18.2 by 11.0 mm to 12.2 by 12.1 mm, suspending a drop-shaped emerald, within scrollwork flourishes, accented by old European and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 3.40 carats, highlighted with green enamel, partially obscured signature for Marcus & Co.; suspended from a fancy link gold chain, length 26 inches, unsigned; circa 1900.

Condition

The mounting to the pendant in good condition, the engraved scrollwork to the reverse remaining fresh. Enamel loss to the emerald drop's cap revealing the gold ground, as seen in the catalogue illustration. Translucent green enamel is also present on the primary portion of the pendant, but this does not appear in the printed catalogue image; the on-line catalogue image is correct. Additional images showing the enamelwork is available upon request. Evidence of enamel repair to one side of the pendant where it is more thickly applied. The round cabochon emerald is medium very slightly bluish green and moderately to heavily included. The emerald drop is slightly less saturated in color and heavily included. Both with surface-reaching inclusions; the drop bearing a chip to one side although not readily apparent. The diamonds are set in platinum and are approximately F-H color, VS clarity. Signature located on the pendant bail. The chain, of the period but unsigned, is in good condition with gentle surface wear.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by GIA report no. 1122328769 stating that the emeralds are natural beryl, with indications of moderate clarity enhancement.
