Set with 14 oval-shaped hardstone intaglios carved in Classic motifs, spaced by links of scrollwork design, bordered by 56 garnet beads, length 16 inches, signed with interlaced C's within cartouche surrounds in two places; detaches intro three sections measuring 8, 4½ and 3½ inches; circa 1870. With fitted box.

Condition

In good condition, with a few spots of discoloration to the gold, not apparent when worn. Evidence of epoxy to the base of some of the garnet bead terminals.The hardstones including jasper, chalcedony, carnelian, onyx and hydrogrossular garnet and range from translucent to opaque. Many of the stones exhibit some wear, primarily in the form of scratching that is only apparent under magnification. The intaglios appear to be a mixture of 19th and 18th century examples with the onyx second from the end possibly being Ancient. The garnet beads are a deep orangy red to purple-red, moderately to heavily included and translucent, with several examples being surface-reaching inclusions and cavities which do not affect their integrity. Some beads with minor chipping and abrading. Gross weight approximately 107 dwts.
