Description

  • silver, gold, peridot, diamond
Set with eight cut-cornered emerald-cut peridots within scalloped surrounds and spaced by scrollwork motifs, supporting a fringe set with 15 pear and modified pear-shaped peridots, the peridots weighing a total of approximately 331.50 carats, decorated with old European, old mine, single and rose-cut diamonds weighing approximately 42.25 carats, length 17 inches; with detachable segments and pendants for variety of wear and lengths, one pendant missing; circa 1870.

Condition

In good condition. The diamonds are approximately H-J color, VS-SI clarity. The peridots are a bright, transparent medium yellowish green, ranging from eye-clean to lightly included. The pendant and links of the necklace are attached by hooks and can be removed so the necklace can be worn in a variety of different ways. The links are numbered on the mounts to assist with re-assembly. The reverse of the mountings displays screw holes, which indicates that this necklace may have come with a tiara attachment at one time. A few of the silver-topped links seem to be polished, but most of the metal retains the patina that one would expect out of a piece of jewelry made around 1870. One pendant is missing from the link with the clasp, but as this would sit on the back of the neck, it is not easily noticeable. Please note that one pendant is missing from the clasp. Please also note that one of the pendant hooks has become detached and will be replaced for the purchaser by Sotheby's.
