Zip and Chic

The Zip Couture Necklace, a true icon of Van Cleef & Arpels, is the perfect example of the maison’s reputed creativity and capability to transform the everyday into exquisite jewels. The ingenious idea to turn the humble zipper into couture originated from Duchess of Windsor, who was impressed by the maison’s technical advancement in jewellery-making, especially for pioneering the ‘mystery-setting’ which allowed stones to be set without any visible metal. Circa 1938, she suggested to Renée Puissant – the Maison’s artistic director and daughter of Alfred Van Cleef – that she should create a piece based on the zip fastener. It took the workshops decades to perfect the micro-engineering of this ground-breaking design. It was not until 1951 that the first model for a Zip Necklace was presented to the public, known as ‘Collier Fermeture Eclair’, a highly flexible and decorative strip that can be converted from a necklace to a bracelet. This legendary design has been revived by Van Cleef & Arpels in recent years; it is evident that the necklace offered as Lot 1915, with a ribbon set with bright pink sapphires, is an elegant interpretation of his iconic piece, a testament to the maison’s dexterity and everlasting aesthetics.
