Catalogue Note

Chris Killip’s work from the North East of England in the 1970s and 1980s defined an era of photographic history. In a clear eyed and realist aesthetic his portrait studies with views of the land, sea and sky are a social documentary of the Thatcher years. By capturing everything that shapes these grave and serious faces (see also lots 136, 218 and 220) he reveals the elusive facets of the human spirit. Rocker and Rosie is one of Chris Killip’s finest and best known images, a photograph about life itself, the human condition. It was used for the cover of his second monograph In Flagrante which was accompanied by an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988 that went on tour across Europe.
